Helping Earthquake Victims in Haiti

In October 2010, I was honored to participate in a mission trip to Haiti. My trip was sponsored by the International Disaster Emergency Service (IDES). Our team focused on building homes and other humanitarian efforts for earthquake victims through the Haitian Christian Mission in Fonds Parisien, about 30 miles east of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
In addition to constructing new homes for earthquake victims, our team distributed food and toys to school children in Fonds Parisien and Mirabalais, and visited orphanages to interact with and bring supplies to the children. I also taught English at HCM’s school and sponsored a boy who lost both of his parents, had no money, and needed a sponsor to attend school and play in the school’s soccer program.
There are so many obstacles for Haitians to overcome, yet I found so many of them have a great amount of hope and faith. By educating the next generation of Haitians and through increased efforts undertaken by mission and humanitarian groups nationwide, there is every reason that conditions will improve and Haitians can look forward to a better tomorrow.
