What we are doing to help
MWW Group has implemented environmentally responsible programs and policies that are making an impact both within our company and in the world we live. Since the 2005 tsunami, there has been a marked increase in the interest of restoring mangrove stands in affected regions. Areas where mangrove forests (trees that thrive in the coastal mix of sea and fresh water) thrived suffered 90 percent fewer casualties than areas where the mangroves had been destroyed. The trees acted as a barrier between the tidal wave and the coastal settlements, drastically reducing the water’s force. New mangroves not only reduce carbon and the threat of climate change, but also protect against typhoons and tsunamis and create habitat for sea life that can be harvested for food by local populations. Elk River is Carbonfund.org’s first offset project in Kansas, one of the dirtiest electricity generation regions in the country. The project is the state’s largest wind turbine facility, generating enough energy to power 42,000 homes. As Elk River also supplements the income of rural farmers and the surrounding communities, this project is delivering economic benefits, in addition to its environmental impact. |
